DSH orders two Ultramax bulk carriers
The DAB Group has reached a significant milestone in the further development of its maritime operations. On September 1, 2026—coinciding with SMM 2026, the world’s leading maritime trade fair in Hamburg—two Ultramax bulk carriers were ordered for the subsidiary DSH (Dassler Schiffahrts- und Handelsgesellschaft mbH) from the Jiangsu Soho Innovation & Technology Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. shipyard in China.
Opting for this vessel type enables versatile deployment in international shipping and establishes a solid foundation for the business’s continued growth. “Ultramax” refers to bulk carriers equipped with their own loading cranes; they primarily transport bulk commodities such as ore, coal, bauxite, and agricultural products (grain, fertilizer, soy), as well as steel products like coils, profiles, and pipes.
The two ordered vessels each measure 200 meters in length and 32 meters in width. They boast a range of 22,000 nautical miles, allowing them to circumnavigate the globe on a single tank of fuel. A key priority for us was selecting vessels featuring state-of-the-art design and the most environmentally friendly technology available—ensuring, of course, full compliance with strict EU regulations. The two ships are scheduled to enter service in the first half of 2029.
In the coming years, the DAB Group intends to expand its commercial shipping activities alongside its technical operations. These two newbuilds represent the first vessels ordered for the corporate group, marking the start of a new chapter in its development. A core element of this strategy involves not only building an in-house fleet but also the long-term chartering of vessels to and from third parties. By combining proprietary tonnage capacity with long-term charter agreements, the Group aims to gradually expand its portfolio and broaden the scope of its shipping operations.
